RESEARCH QUESTION
How can algorithms and data mining be utilized to facilitate an immersive experience allowing individuals to understand and empathize with diverse realities or perspectives based on other people’s online behaviors and digital footprint?
VALUE STATEMENT
heyComputer is a responsive installation highlighting how points of view can be constructed through targeted content on social media.
This installation aims to demonstrate how people can become victims of microtargeting, where personalized content creates narrow echo chambers. It poses critical questions about the role of these algorithms in shaping our view of the world, and how personal interests online contribute to ideological isolation.
Ultimately, the installation seeks to engage visitors in a discussion about the impact of social media on our ability to see diverse viewpoints, and to encourage critical thinking about how our data is used to manipulate our worldview.
