Systematic Visualization. Carbon Emission: comparing meat vs vegeterian products. Shopping Data Visualization. Taking active action in the way we shop.

UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON
2021

BRIEF

Design and produce two screen-based visualisations of environmental or climate-change data for a specific user. These two visualisations should work together to allow your user to understand different aspects of the climate crisis.

Personal Visualization: Should work on a personal level, for example allowing your user to understand the impact of their day-to-day actions, or tracking changes they’ve made or are making to their lifestyle.

Systematic Visualization: Should look at wider elements or effects, for example allowing your user to explore global climate trends or to understand data that they have previously found too complex or perhaps even boring.

PERSONAL VISUALIZATION

Initial planning and references at the start of this project.

RESEARCH

Products that my user buys every 2 weeks. Their Grocery Shop of choice.

COLLECTING DATA

Analyzing the labels of products my user regularly consumes, I researched their CO2 emissions and energy values (kJ/Cal) using various web platforms. This visualization compares the distance the food travels from its origin to my user with the energy the food provides.

Following a grid system I designed, I created the visual elements for the data visualization using Illustrator, Photoshop, and Figma. Keys were designed to help the user easily read the data, and the design was adapted to a tablet format to meet the user's needs.

USER TESTING

Testing the usability of various componenets with my user.

SYSTEMATIC VIZUALIZATION

While researching the topic for the second visualization, I found an article stating that Milan reduced carbon emissions by making school lunches healthier. According to the graphs, this was achieved by reducing the consumption of high-impact foods, such as animal products. For the second project, the idea was to create a data visualization illustrating the environmental impact of meat products versus plant-based products.

I designed components for a data visualization that compares animal products with plant-based products. The website was created for tablet use at the user's request.

USER TESTING

Testing the usability of various componenets with my user.
